Big Bend Camping area

  • Located in the Carnarvon Gorge National Park at the Big Bend about a 9.7 km walk from the visitor centre. It is only suitable for tent camping and must be booked through National Parks QLD. No dogs allowed.

Walking tracks

  • Nature Trail 1.5 km circuit, a level track with several creek crossings

  • Rock Pool 600 m walk, great easy short walk to a picnic area with toilets, great swimming after a long walk. The second pool is deeper and better suited for swimming. There are lots of turtles and a few platypus calling it home.

  • Mickeys Creek Gorge walk 3 km return. Easy flat walking along the creek. From the Mickey Creek track there is a turn off going to Warrumbah Creek Gorge and is well worth doing.

  • Boolimba Bluff track 6.2 km return has a 300m very steep and rugged section with ladders involved and is only recommended for the physically fit. You get rewarded with a breathtaking view on top with different lookouts.

  • Moss Garden walk is 1.3 km from main track and 7 km from the visitor centre. At the Moss Garden, a small waterfall cascades over the sandstone ledge, collecting in a clear pool, lined with colourful rocks and water-carved boulders. Elegant tree ferns create delicate shadows on the carpet of lush mosses, liverworts and ferns. Spend a while here, soaking up the cool atmosphere before tackling the return journey. Multiple creek crossings to get in but what a beautiful oasis.

  • Amphitheatre walk is 1.2 km from the main track or 8.6 km from the visitor centre. It goes up the ladder into an amazing space with an incredible acoustic. A very magical place you must experience and feel it. It’s been over 100 million years in the making.

  • Ward’s Canyon 540 m from the main track and 9.3 km walk from the visitor centre. Don’t miss this one as it is absolutely gorgeous and cool on a hot day.

  • Art Gallery 600m walk from the main track and 10.6 km from the visitor centre. You are coming to a 62m-long sandstone wall featuring 2000 engravings, ochre stencils and free-hand paintings adorning the sandstone walls. This is one of Australia’s finest examples of stencil art. See if you can find boomerangs, hands, feet, stone axes, shields, nets and an assortment of animal tracks. You can also read interesting facts about the aboriginal arts & the meaning behind them and a great display of artworks on the rock.

  • Cathedral Cave walk 18.2 km from the visitor centre. Some of the artwork is thousands of years old, while others were created here a mere 200 years ago. Pause to consider how much or how little has changed since the first marks were left here by unknown hands.

  • Boowinda Gorge walk 18.4 km from the visitor centre. A very impressive and uncrowded gorge.  The walls of this extraordinary canyon are alive with ancient colours and textures. On your return, stop at the exit to the gorge to soak up panoramic views of golden sandstone cliffs, soaring ridgelines and the basalt-capped tableland.

  • Big Bend this is a great place to soak the aching muscles in the chilly blue water and have some lunch surrounded by sandstone cliffs. You also can camp here on the edge of an incredible rock face and waterhole.

There’s no better way to refresh and reconnect with nature than walking in national parks. You’ll discover much more on foot than from the car window! Get up close to delicate ferns beside the track, glimpse flashes of colourful birds and butterflies flitting through foliage or gaze in wonder at picture-perfect views. The main gorge track is a 19.4 km return track from the visitor centre and you have to allow about 8 hours walking time. It is rated a Grade 4 walking track. If you walk all the side walks it will add up to around 30 km. The main gorge walking track crosses Carnarvon Creek many times as it winds the 9.7km from the visitor centre to Big Bend. We have counted about 34 creek crossings return and it depends on the water level on how difficult they are to cross. You can watch us tackle the Carnarvon Gorge National Park in our episodes 30 and 31.

Enjoy
